I teach basic machine sewing with a little handwork thrown in. We start with learning the parts of a sewing machine, how to thread it, wind a bobbin, and sew a straight stitch. Then we move on from there. Projects will be fun and creative.
I have a basic set of projects for beginners, including a cute drawstring bag, pillow case, apron, pajama pants, cross body bag, back pack, t-shirt, maxi-skirt, and more. After that I will work with students to determine their next project.
All students will learn how to lay out a pattern, read and follow pattern instructions, problem solve and personalize their projects. Learning to sew allows kids to make their own creative ideas come to life.
I will begin accepting students at age 7 after having completed first grade. Younger kids are still developing the dexterity in their hands needed to operate a sewing machine safely.
Each student will need to bring a sewing machine. If you don’t have one, I can recommend a good one for around $200. The Sewing Nook, near Bagel Place just north of 34th on Bell, is a great place to buy. (Its a double-bonus to buy from them, you are supporting a local business and they can provide maintenance on all the machines they sell.)
